Headlight Restoration: The Service You didn't Know you needed
Why You Should Restore Your Headlights
Out here in Boulder, Colorado, we are about a mile closer to the sun than at sea level. That means that your vehicle is a mile closer to taking a beating from the rays of the sun. Not only is the sun damaging your headlights, but also the weather that we experience in and around Boulder, the salt and chemicals they use to treat the roads during the winter, and don’t get me started on how bad automatic car washes are on your vehicle, let alone your headlights.
Not only are faded and yellowed headlights unpleasant to look at, they can also be dangerous to drive with. Research shows that driver’s visibility deteriorates as much as 80% when headlights become cloudy or hazy. During the day, this might not be a problem, but during the night or extreme weather, especially in Colorado, it can become dangerous quickly when your visibility is already limited.
The good news is that, most of the time, headlights can be restored to a “like new” condition. Most people don’t even realize that headlights can be restored, and often just buy new ones instead. New headlights can cost upwards of $300, not including installation, shipping, time, and frustration. For a fraction of the price, and time, you can have your headlights restored, and be back on the road with great visibility! Now obviously there are times when headlights can’t be restored, such as when cracked, damaged, or scratched deeply, but these should be replaced anyways.
So what does restoring headlights involve? Simply put, we sand down the old clear coat on the headlights until the oxidation, and fading is gone, and the surface is smoothed out. Once the headlights are uniform and smooth, a ceramic coating is applied to seal the headlights and protect them from the elements once again. This coating should last for a very long time, keeping your headlights looking like new, and your visibility crystal clear.
